It’s Not Love If It Doesn’t Challenge You

Joey and I had planned to meet at our favorite spot, Luna Café. We ordered a slice of their famous blueberry pie and a plate of oatmeal cookies to share. “You know,” he began, “this blueberry pie reminds me of the one my girlfriend and I shared on our first date. It was such a perfect day.”

I noticed the change in his tone. “Is everything okay between you two?” I asked gently.

Joey sighed. “We’ve been dating for over a year but things have been rough lately. It feels like we’re drifting apart and I’m not sure if it’s just the distance or if we’re growing apart for real.”

Long-distance relationships can be incredibly challenging, especially when the feeling of closeness starts to fade. “It’s tough, Joey. Don’t throw in the towel just yet. Relationships, especially long-distance ones, require a lot of patience and understanding. Have you talked to her about how you’re feeling?”

Joey sighed, “I don’t know if I’ve been clear enough. We’ve mentioned it but we end up getting into arguments about it. I miss her. I miss the little things. It’s hard when we can’t just hang out like we used to.”

“Yeah, I get that,” I said. “It’s easy to feel disconnected when you’re not physically together but it’s important to keep the communication strong. Even though you’re far apart, there are ways to bridge the gap. Have you tried scheduling regular calls or even watching a movie together online?”

Joey’s tone softened, “We’ve tried some video calls, but they don’t feel the same as being there with her. And it’s hard to keep the excitement going when the visits are so few and far between.”

“Joey, I get it but remember, surprising her with thoughtful messages, sharing your day-to-day moments and even planning future visits can reignite the spark. Most importantly, trust is key. As long as you trust each other and keep an open line of communication, you’ll be able to get through this together.”

After a pause, Joey let out a relieved sigh. “Thanks, man. I needed to hear that. I’ll try to talk to her honestly about what I’m feeling.”

As I reflect on our conversation, I’m reminded that relationships—whether near or far—require patience and a lot of heart. For all those out there facing similar challenges, remember this: love is about staying connected and being patient no matter the distance. Trust the process, and don’t be afraid to open up and communicate with your partner!
