The first National Women’s Day in the US was celebrated on February 28th, 1909. That was over a century ago!
It was first declared by the Socialist Party of America after 15,000 women marched through New York city demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights in 1908. What an amazing achievement to kick things off, right?
In 1913, a woman by the name of Clara Zetkin, who was the leader of the ‘Women’s Office’ for the Social Democratic Party in Germany suggested turning the event into an international one, so that women around the world would unite together on the same day to press for their demands of equality.
And that was how International Women’s Day was born. Since then, the day has become a global day of recognizing and celebrating women worldwide, as well as a platform to coordinate international efforts for women’s rights and equality.
I am awed by the history of this special day because it makes me realize just how far women have come in the past century alone. And this only exemplifies the empowerment and strength that lies in every woman!
On this day, we take a moment to salute the women in our lives for the special place they have in our hearts and in this world with Happy Women’s Day wishes.
Gosh, I sure have a lot of Women’s Day cards to send out. Which loved women in your lives are you going to send Women’s Day wishes to? Don’t forget you can make your message extra special by also sending along a Chocolate Cheesecake Day card to put an extra smile on her face!
Speaking of smiles, I owe you an update on the surprise that Aaliyah had for me for last week’s “Share a Smile Day”! Well, it turned out to be an old childhood toy of mine that she found in my mother’s attic when she helped with spring-cleaning.
That sure put a smile on my face! But not as much as simply having these two amazing women in my life and in my heart.
So here’s to my mother, Aaliyah, and all the other special women in my life that I am honoured to call my friend: Happy Women’s Day!
