The contribution of women in all spheres of life has been significant. Sports-women like Serena Williams, Ronda Rousey, politicians like Hilary Clinton or Business women like Meg Whitman are a few names, whose exemplary dedication and courage act as a symbol of inspiration to thousands of women everyday.
The UN declared March 8 as International Women’s Day to celebrate the achievements made by women all around the world. Since the 1900’s, women have come together to fight for equality and fairness that they deserve in every sphere of life. There is a need, now more than ever, to continue hearing every woman’s voice in this fight.
I caught up with my friends, Fred, Irina and Megan at a cafe in New York, today. Over hot cups of coffee, we were soon engaged in a conversation about our goals and dreams.
Irina told us she wished to be on the cover of Vanity Fair. She, was, distressed by the ‘perfect’ image promoted by the fashion industry, that doesn’t necessarily reflect reality, and may serve as an obstacle in the path to achieve her dreams. Megan, pitched into the conversation speaking about the difficulties women have to face in the business world due to challenges such as unequal pay. She said she wants to one day own a restaurant chain, but is conscious of the entrepreneurship world being dominated by men, as well as problems such as balancing work and family life, building a support network etc.
Fred and I were quite disconcerted by the challenges that our friends and women faced on a daily basis and vouched to support the cause of women’s rights.
This Women’s day, I request all men, especially, to take a personal stand in the fight for women’s rights. Let’s educate boys and girls at a young age to understand and respect women, instead of addressing feminine qualities as weak with insults such as ‘Don’t be a girl’, to bring about a change in the world!
It is no longer fitting to solely play a passive role, but to commit ourselves to the empowerment of women and gender equality.
Share some empowering messages through our e-cards, this women’s day and every day, to spread the value of women in our lives!
